Both the Austin Chronicle and Austinist.com names us as one of their bands to watch in 2008. And Austinist compared us to Lambchop.

From Austin Sound

Very little has been heard from Goodnight, Fish since they released their stunning 2005 debut, but recently the quartet has been playing more frequently and recorded a new batch of songs that will see release on two split albums, one with Arizona’s Grumpy Bear and the other with locals the Lovely Sparrows. Like their aptly titled first release, Echo, Chime, and Slightly Rumble, the new material drifts through beautifully subtle folk-pop, ranging from moments of poignant restraint and understatement to catchy rhythms disjointed by unexpected shifts and drops. This Friday, Goodnight, Fish will be playing the Mohawk along with AUX and Our Solar System in support of Tame…Tame and Quiet’s cd release.

Profile : Goodnight, Fish

Year Formed: 2001 (hooray highschool. We kept it a secret from our friends because we were ashamed)

Paul Brinkley: Drums, Guitar, Ukulele, Trombone, Organ, Melodica

Brendan Kiefer: Guitar, Mandolin, Accordion, Clarinet, Autoharp

Andrew Jackson: Guitar, bass

Echo, Chime, and Slightly Rumble (2005, self-released)

Split with The Lovely Sparrows (soon to be released, One room Studios) <---(gf: actually not so much anymore)

Split with Grumpy Bear (soon to be released, undetermined)

Influences:

Our instruments, each other, various musical recordings, visual art, cats, the beegees

Strangest comment or comparison ever made about your music: We've been compared to Jim Morrison and Pink Floyd. I don't hear it, the guy was stoned a lot.

Favorite local bands: The Narrow Escapes, Mermaid Blonde. We like our friends' and each others' music a lot - we're shameless. Also there's this diy type label called Always Do Your Best that is doing interesting stuff. Ghost Night (one of the cofounders of upstart one room studios) is really great, we saw Charles Pott's Magic Windmill Band once and loved it, same with Shapes Have Fangs.

Favorite local venue: To play at? Jesse's bed and breakfast - a friend's house who somehow gets great touring acts to stop by and also somehow always lets us play there. To see shows? The Parish always sounds good, the Mohawk is really cool outside, I don't know. There's too many .

Upcoming shows scheduled: July 6th at the Mohawk with Tame...Tame and Quiet (cd release) , AUX, and Our Solar System July 18th at the Scoot Inn with Virgin of the Birds and Ghost Night

Shows over the next month that you're excited to see: Can't keep up. I (Paul) caught Casiotone for the Painfully Alone recently, but had to miss the Rosebuds. I'll probably find out about great shows the day after.

Some of your favorite albums from the past year: Daydreams by The Blank Tapes (can't say enough about these guys), Yellow House by Grizzly Bear. Beach House. The Rosebuds' Night of the Furies. It seems like most of the music we've been really getting in to hasn't been recent releases.

Ideal band (past or present) to open for on a national tour: Hmm, that's a tough one. I'd (Brendan) be happy opening for Little Wings, or Mellon Collie era Smashing Pumpkins. I (Paul) would want to open for Galaxie 500 or Camper Van Beethoven

Austin Sound questions:

What is the status of your split release with Grumpy Bear and how did that collaboration come about? It actually came about as a result of that thing called myspace. One of us found the other, we did a music trade and then they suggested we release a split. Most of it is recorded--just need to finish a few vocal tracks. We found out later that we were friends with Jon [Rooney] from Abandoned Love Records (who put out The Lovely Sparrow's EP and a Grumpy Bear album). So we do have some real connections sort of after the fact.

We have to ask since it's mentioned in one of your bios - what is roofball? Roofball is a beautiful and sacred sport that has been tradition among us since the early days. Let's just say it involves a slanted roof, a plush football, and a few guys jumping around like fools.

Song Introduction: For those of you pining for the heyday of Disco we give to you "Master of the Dance Floor." Both this song and "Silver Dimes" will be appearing on our split with The Lovely Sparrows.
